How to Install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04

Sublime Text is a popular text and source code editor for web and software development. It’s blazing fast, and comes with lots of powerful features out of the box. The application can be upgraded and customized by installing new plugins and making custom settings.

This article describes how to install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04. Installing Sublime on Ubuntu is quite easy. We will enable the Sublime repository, import the repository’s GPG key, and install the editor. The same instructions should work on other Debian based distributions.

Installing Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu 20.04

Perform the following steps as root or user with sudo privileges to install Sublime Text 3 on Ubuntu:

  1. Install the dependencies needed to add the new repository over HTTPS:
    sudo apt update
    sudo apt install dirmngr gnupg apt-transport-https ca-certificates software-properties-common
  2. Import the GPG key of the Sublime APT repository and APT repository to your system software repository list by typing:
    curl -fsSL | sudo apt-key add -
    sudo add-apt-repository "deb apt/stable/"
  3. Once the repository is enabled, install Sublime Text 3 by typing:
    sudo apt install sublime-text

That’s all, you have Sublime Text 3 installed on your Ubuntu 20.04 desktop, and you can start using it.

When a new version is released, you can update Sublime packages via your desktop standard Software Update tool.

Starting Sublime Text

You can start the Sublime Text editor either from a terminal by typing sublime or by clicking on the Sublime icon (Activity -> Sublime):
